Sea Girt’s Historic Beacon House
The Beacon House was built circa 1879 with lumber that came from
the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. When the
Exhibition closed, many of the buildings, pavilions and exhibits
were disassembled and the materials reused. The lumber was
shipped by barge down the Delaware River and up the Atlantic
Coast where it was unloaded on the beach and brought by horse to
our present site.
The two buildings were constructed as private homes on what had
formerly been potato fields. During the most recent phase of
renovations, columns were uncovered that appear to have come
from the entryway to the Centennial’s Netherlands Pavilion. The
stairways in both houses were originally part of the staircases
in the Agricultural Exhibit building at the Centennial
Exhibition. A beam in the Main House attic has the date “1879”
carved in it.
In the late 1920’s – early 1930’s, the Westphal family converted
the houses into an Inn that was open only during the summer
season. In December 1998, after three generations in their
family, I purchased The Beacon House and began year ‘round inn
keeping and numerous renovations. All rooms now have private
baths and are air conditioned, 8 private ocean view balconies
have been added,
many rooms have fireplaces, and some have Jacuzzis.
I am proud and honored to maintain the legacy of these historic
buildings and delight in my ability to share them with you. Your
stay at The Beacon House, just a block from one of the finest
beaches at the Jersey shore, with a private pool and wonderful
amenities, makes for an incomparable getaway any time of year!
