Since Monmouth Park Race Track began it has been widely noted, and during the early period it was famously called the “Newmarket of America”, a phrase that likened the Monmouth Race Track to the famous racecourse in England.

Today Monmouth Park Race Track hosts the $1 million dollar Haskell Invitational Handicap; the richest invitational thoroughbred horse race in North America. This renowned race takes place in early August in between the Triple Crown series events and the Breeder’s Cup. After drawing much attention regionally, the Monmouth Race Track was chosen to host the famous horse event, the Breeder’s Cup, in 2007 for the first time ever! This year Monmouth Park Race Track will host 94 days of live racing during the May through September racing season; gates open at 11:30am and the first race begins at noon. Monmouth Park Race Track has two tracks - a one mile oval and a turf course with seven furlongs; open Wednesday through Sunday.

Freehold Raceway in Freehold NJ is a half mile racetrack, and it has the distinction of being the oldest half mile racetrack in the United States. Established in 1853, Freehold Raceway became the home of the Cane Pace, a harness horse race that has been held annually since 1955. A year after starting Cane Pace, Freehold Raceway joined with two other tracks that host harness racing, one in Delaware and one in New York, and became the leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for pacers hosting the Cane Pace leg. The other races, the Little Brown Jug and the Messenger Stakes are also infamous harness racing events. Today, Freehold Raceway features live standard bred harness races for trotters and pacers from August through early June.
